Kostas Athanasakis

Assistant Professor of Health Economics

Kostas is an Assistant Professor of Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment at the University of West Attica (Athens, Greece) and a Visiting Fellow at LSE Health.
His research primarily focuses on the economic evaluation and health technology assessment of healthcare interventions, pharmaceutical economics and policy - with a particular focus on the economics of vaccines-, and the economics of NCDs. In recent years, his research has expanded to health system sustainability and resilience.
He currently serves as a member of the Central Board of Health of Greece, where he holds the designated seat for health economics, the Committee of Public Health Experts, in the designated seat of health economics, and the National Vaccinations Committee of Greece. He also collaborates with the Archimedes centre for AI and Data Science, where he explores the impact of AI on information asymmetries in health.
Kostas has acted as Advisor/Consultant for numerous international organizations, such as the WHO, the ECDC, the World Bank, and the OECD. In collaboration with the LSE Health team, he coordinates the Country Report of the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR) for Greece, and serves as a member of the PHSSR EU Advisory Group. Since 2021, Kostas has been Associate Editor of the International Journal of Technology Assessment in Health Care (IJTAHC – Cambridge University Press).
