Loizos Symeou

Dr. Loizos Symeou is Professor of Sociology of Education at the European University Cyprus. Since 2018 he has been elected as the Vice Rector of Academic Affairs of the university. He studied at the University of Sydney, Australia and the University of Cambridge, UK, from which he received his Ph.D. His doctoral studies were funded by the UK Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) Award Scheme. He served as Chairperson of the Department of Education Sciences of European University Cyprus (2007-2012) and Dean of the School of Humanities, Social and Education Sciences (2014-2018). His areas of interest and publications are in the sociological investigation of the institutions of schools and families and how these institutions’ relationships link to cultural and social capital. His more recent work focuses on broader issues of Social Justice in education, and includes studies on homework, on the school experience of Roma children and families, and families and higher education. His research activities have been funded by national, European, and international organisations. He has published one monograph and more than 100 refereed journal articles and book chapters.
